Forty-one-year-old Juozapas Tiškevičius, now a colonel in the Russian army, his chest decorated with medals — this portrait was taken in 1876 in Vilnius, at the "A. Strauss & J. Brzozovski" photo studio. Like exhibit No. 41, this photograph is part of the photo album of Stefanija Sofija Šostakaitė-Tiškevičienė, an employee of the Kretinga estate, held at the Kretinga Museum (inv. no. KM IF 6942). On the back of the card, a pencilled date reads: "1 September 1876, received in Kretinga."
More than a decade separates the count here from exhibit No. 41 (Paris, c. 1864, age twenty-nine) — now he is a man of mature years, decorated, wearing a colonel's epaulettes. Juozapas Tiškevičius owned the estates of Izabelinas, Palanga, Lentvaris, Kretinga, Užutrakis, Dunilava and others, along with palaces in Vilnius; he was a colonel in the Russian Imperial hussars, founded the Palanga resort, and built Lithuania's first power plant and telephone line at the Kretinga estate. He is buried in the Tiškevičius family chapel at Kretinga — beside his wife Sofija (exhibit No. 42), whom we see with him as a young newlywed couple in exhibit No. 51.
The animation brings a small detail to life: his long, sharply pointed moustache — its tips curl gently upward, as though it had just been neatly waxed and twirled before sitting for the photograph.
