Another photograph of Count Juozapas Tiškevičius (1835–1891) — this time in an even more elaborate full-dress hussar uniform: a fur-trimmed pelisse slung over one shoulder, an ornately braided dolman, and a tasselled busby resting on a small table beside him. It was taken in a studio with painted scenery — a classical column, a balcony balustrade, a garden landscape in the background — the kind of backdrop period photo studios used to create a stately, almost theatrical portrait.
Compared with exhibit No. 41 (where Juozapas was photographed seated, in a plainer uniform, at L. Laffon's studio in Paris), this photograph shows the same man — the same moustache, the same stance with one hand on his hip — but dressed for a different, more ceremonial occasion. Count Juozapas Tiškevičius owned the estates of Palanga, Lentvaris, Kretinga, Užutrakis and others, and held the rank of colonel in the Russian Imperial hussars — a uniform like this wasn't a costume for the photographer, but a real mark of his rank.
The animation here is neither quiet nor gentle — it's dramatic: the frozen pose suddenly bursts into motion, the count raises his sword and lunges straight at the camera, teeth bared. As if the calm, dignified portrait briefly revealed the officer underneath the estate owner.
