In mid-1896, at S. Fleury's photography studio in Vilnius, the family of the late Count Juozapas Tiškevičius (1835–1891) — lord of Kretinga, Lentvaris, Užutrakis and Palanga — sat for a portrait: his widow and all eight of his adult children with their spouses, fourteen people in all. Standing (from left): sons Juozapas (1868–1917, lord of Užutrakis), Aleksandras (1864–1945, lord of Kretinga) and Antanas (1866–1919, a Vilnius businessman), daughter Marija, son-in-law Aleksandras Antanas Feliksas Ostrovskis (1866–1904), and son Vladislovas (1865–1936, lord of Lentvaris — exhibit No. 38).
Seated: son Feliksas (1869–1933, lord of Palanga), daughters-in-law Antanina Sofija Lonckaitė and Marija Puslovska, the family's matriarch — widowed Countess Sofija Horvataitė (c. 1839–1919, exhibit No. 51) — daughter Elena Klotilda Ostrovska, and daughter-in-law Maria Krystyna Lubomirska (1871–1958, Vladislovas's wife — exhibits No. 36–37). Seated on the carpet in front are the family's youngest members — daughter-in-law Elena Civinska and daughter Sofija Dembinska. The photograph is held at the Kretinga Museum (inv. no. KM IF 6833) and was restored in 2008 at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art's P. Gudynas restoration centre.
The animation completely transforms the mood of the photograph: the stiff, formal family pose dissolves within moments — relatives turn toward each other, raise their hands, break into laughter. It's as if the photographer's call to "hold still" had finally been lifted, and the stern Victorian-era portrait had come alive as a warm family gathering.
