Fifteen-year-old Vladislovas Tiškevičius — a cadet of a Russian Imperial secondary military school — captured by photographer S. Ptašinskis in 1880. The photograph is held in the Kretinga Museum's iconography collection (KM-IF6947). His uniform, with a two-tone stripe on its stand-up collar, shoulder straps, and four gleaming buttons, was the mandatory dress for cadets of the era's military schools.
Vladislovas was born on 26 June 1865 at the Kretinga estate, into the family of Count Juozapas and Countess Sofija Tiškevičius (exhibit No. 51). His sister Elena Klotilda described him in her memoirs as warm-hearted and friendly, if reckless with money — capable of emptying his pockets for the first beggar he met. In 1891, on his father's death, he inherited the Lentvaris estate; in 1892 he married Maria Krystyna Lubomirska (exhibits No. 36–37); and he later became a noted art collector — in 1907, the collection of 16th–17th-century Western European paintings he donated became the founding gift of the Vilnius Museum of Science and Art.
The animation changes neither the angle nor the frame — it simply lets the old, still portrait come gently to life: the cadet's features shift almost imperceptibly, as though he were briefly catching his breath after holding a long pose for the photographer.
