This photograph shows the abandoned palace, its balcony balustrade now empty — the sculptures of the four winds that once stood here are gone.
These 17th-century sculptures depicted four mythological wind gods — Boreas (the north wind), Zephyrus (the west), Notus (the south), and Eurus (the east) — decorating the gate pillars of Warsaw's "Palace Under the Four Winds" (Pałac pod Czterema Wiatrami, Długa Street 38/40), designed in the 17th century by the architect Tylman van Gameren. For 30 years these sculptures stood here, on the balcony balustrade of the Tiškevičius palace in Lentvaris. The official version says they were returned to their original place in Warsaw before the Second World War; another, unofficial version holds that they were simply taken away to Poland. Today the sculptures do stand on the fence pillars of that same Warsaw palace, on Długa Street, where they can still be seen.
