This photograph comes from the same restoration project documentation, recording the central risalit of the northwest façade in the second half of the 20th century: most of the left side is sunk in such deep shadow that almost nothing in it can be made out, while piles of rubble lie in front of the palace. That deep patch of shadow is no less telling than the ruined archway itself — a reminder of how hard it is today to reconstruct exactly how the palace looked in the hardest decades after the Second World War, when it stood abandoned and was put to uses far from its original purpose.
